**Steps Involved In Hydraulic Mining:**

1. Dig a pit on the side of the sidewalk closest to the house.
2. Dig a trench on the opposite side of the sidewalk.
3. Start the hole on the trench side of the sidewalk and seat the PVC pipe in it by placing the 2X4 against the end of the PVC and lightly tapping it into place with a mallet.
4. Attach the water hose to the spigot and pressure washer.
5. Start the pressure washer.
6. Place the nozzle into the PVC pipe and pull the trigger.
7. As the mud and water begins to flow back out of the PVC pipe, periodically drive the PVC pipe further into the hole using the 2X4 and mallet.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until the pipe starts to come through the other side.
9. Drive the PVC pipe into the hole with the mallet and 2X4 until equal amounts of it are on either side of the sidewalk.
10. Place the drain tile into the trench.
11. Attach the drain tile to the PVC pipe with the fittings and use a screw to secure them.
12. Cover the drain tile with the dirt from the trench.

Instructions for Hydraulic Mining

Hydraulic mining is actually a method of mining gemstones! We’ve adapted it and used it as a method of digging a hole under an existing sidewalk or driveway without having to cut the concrete. It is useful for placing drain tile, pipes, or electrical wiring.

Tools Needed

Mallet: https://amzn.to/2XGQkiG
Pressure washer: https://amzn.to/3ifHaBm
Safety goggles: https://amzn.to/3knruy3

Materials Needed

Steps Involved In Hydraulic Mining

Dig a pit on the side of the sidewalk closest to the house.

Dig a trench on the opposite side of the sidewalk.

Start the hole on the trench side of the sidewalk and seat the PVC pipe in it by placing the 2X4 against the end of the PVC and lightly tapping it into place with a mallet.

Attach the water hose to the spigot and pressure washer.

Start the pressure washer.

Place the nozzle into the PVC pipe and pull the trigger.

As the mud and water begins to flow back out of the PVC pipe, periodically drive the PVC pipe further into the hole using the 2X4 and mallet. You must have the pipe aimed slightly upward- this allows the mud to flow back out of it.

Repeat steps 6 and 7 until the pipe starts to come through the other side.

Drive the PVC pipe into the hole with the mallet and 2X4 until equal amounts of it are on either side of the sidewalk.

Place the drain tile into the trench.

Attach the drain tile to the PVC pipe with the fittings and use a screw to secure them.

Cover the drain tile with the dirt from the trench.

  1. Good trick. Earlier in life, I bought a length of 3/4 PVC, pair of PVC male and female hose thread ends, and a brass jet sweeper nozzle. It did the same trick as the pressure washer for several hundred dollars less, and it still works 30 years later.
P.S: You left that pipe full of mud, but didn't say anything about it.

  2. Great video but I do have a question – is this legal? In Canada, sidewalk, the grass boulevard and the curb are all public property and owned by the MD/county/city. I was under the impression that a homeowner isn't allowed to tunnel under public sidewalk for any reason, be it drainage or running electrical conduit for an outlet for block heaters or RV power

  3. If you don’t own or want to rent a pressure washer, you can do the same thing with this hose nozzle from Amazon:

Underhill 6-Inch Garden Water Hose Nozzle, Sprayer, Jet, 7 GPM 80 PSI, 3/4-Inch Thread Inlet, High Pressure Attachment, Heavy-Duty Brass, Adjustable, PowerBlast Super Sweeper, SN6-75

If you’ve got some distance to go, you can even connect it to a length of PVC pipe with threaded connectors at each end of the pipe—one for your hose and the other for the nozzle.

Make sure the PVC pipe is long enough to reach all the way under the sidewalk or driveway.

  4. Where can I rent this “hydraulic machine”, I’ve been researching for a whole day and couldn’t find anything similar to rent or purchase. What brand and model?

  5. I just did this today, worked great. Mind you, I looked like I'd been mud wrestling for 3 hours, first 10 minutes of the shower and there was still dirt washing out of my skin!! There is no way you do this job in a dress shirt amd khakis and still have clean hands at the end. All in all, took about 3 hours to do the job, and another 45 minutes to wash everything!! Great technique though, wouldn't do again!!
