How To Cook A Perfect Poached Egg – MasterChef Canada | MasterChef World

POACHED EGGS: A FASHIONABLE MASTERPIECE

Poached eggs might seem like a simple dish, but perfecting them is another story. The egg white must be cooked through, while the yolk remains runny. Anything less than a perfect poached egg might leave you feeling unsatisfied. Fear not, with just a few simple steps you can create a fashionable masterpiece in your own kitchen.

SELECTING THE PERFECT EGG

The key to a perfect poached egg starts with selecting the right egg. Buy the freshest eggs possible, as fresh eggs have a firmer white that will hold its shape when added to the boiling water. Use a slotted spoon to lower the egg into the water, or strain it through a fine mesh sieve to get rid of the excess slimy egg whites.

BOILING WATER WITHOUT THE HASSLE

Boiling water is an integral part of cooking poached eggs. While you could boil it in a pot, experts suggest filling a frying pan with water about one and a half inches deep. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium. You will need the water to be hot enough that it cooks the egg but not hot enough that the water is bubbling.

ADDING SALT AND VINEGAR

The next step is to add salt and vinegar to the water. The salt will help the egg white coagulate faster, while the vinegar helps hold the egg white together. Add one tablespoon of vinegar and one tablespoon of salt to the water. Keep in mind that you don’t need to measure it exactly.

DEFTLY ADDING POACHED EGG TO THE WATER

Now comes the delicate process of adding the egg to the water. Take the egg and break it into a small bowl, then slide the egg into the boiling water. Don’t add too many eggs at once. You want each egg to have enough space to poach without merging with one another.

MONITORING YOUR EGG

Keep an eye on your egg. The cooking time for poached eggs varies depending on your preference, the size of the egg and its temperature. For a runny egg yolk, cook the egg for two and a half minutes. For a soft yolk, cook for about three minutes, while for a firmer yolk cook for around four minutes.

THE FINISHING TOUCH

Once you have achieved your desired level of doneness, remove the poached egg with a slotted spoon and dry it on a paper towel. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper, and then enjoy. Or, use this perfect poached egg as a topping for your avocado toast, benedict, or sandwich.

IN CONCLUSION

Cooking a perfect poached egg is not rocket science, but it does require some patience and skill. Follow these simple steps, and you can wow your guests with a master chef-worthy egg. Perfect for brunch or any meal, poached eggs are a quintessential dish that everyone should learn to cook well.

  1. C'mon, man. It's a COOKING competition. For television consumption. It's not life or death in the real world. And what you absolutely CANNOT do is play the 'mom with Alzheimer's card'. Go home and be with her, then. That can't be brought up in the context of this competition.

  2. I’m quite sad chef Alvin fell for the boo hoo story, if you’re competing in MFC just bring you and no one else, if you think you are going to lose the round take it with pride.. don’t bring in family members illness in this to try get the judges to feel remorse and sadness, they are there to judge if your dish rocks or sucks.

    C’mon.
