Welcome to our Native Plants program with Suzanne Balet-Haight from Balet Flowers & Design. If you missed the live session, don’t worry! You can now watch the recorded video here for free.
In this program, Suzanne discusses the beauty and benefits of incorporating native plants into your garden. With over 40 years of experience in the field, Suzanne shares her knowledge gained from studying at various institutions and cultivating hands-on expertise.
Native plants not only enhance the aesthetics of your garden but also contribute to a healthier environment. They require less maintenance and provide food and pollination for birds, butterflies, bees, and even humans.
To create a natural ecosystem, Suzanne suggests observing and taking inspiration from the colors, textures, and variety of plants found in nature, like the ones she captured during a hike at Saratoga Spring State Park.
When designing your garden, consider the ideal soil, water, and light conditions for different native plants in your area. You can choose from a wide range of true native plants or native cultivars, which offer similar benefits.
Suzanne highlights a few native plants that add beauty to your garden while attracting beneficial insects, butterflies, and bees. She discusses the adaptability of plants like achillea (yarrow) and lupine to various soil conditions, as well as the importance of selecting the right cultivars.
Discover more about coreopsis, including the native coreopsis lanceletta and its self-seeding characteristics, as well as the versatile coreopsis moonbeam that thrives in sandy to clay soils.
If you’re passionate about gardening or looking to create a more sustainable and vibrant garden, this video is a must-watch. Join Suzanne Balet-Haight as she shares her expertise on native plants.
